Yesterday I went live with
from , and we talked about what it means to be Latina in this moment, in a country where our communities are being targeted, detained, and dehumanized, and where people in power are hoping we stay silent about it.We unpacked:
The horrifying stories of grandfathers, mothers, and workers being detained after decades of living in the U.S., even when they’ve paid taxes and followed every rule.
How ICE is now using Medicaid and IRS records to track people down, including the parents of U.S. citizen children.
What’s really in that “one big, beautiful bill,” and how its most devastating cuts to healthcare and benefits are timed to hit after the next midterms.
How misinformation spreads in our communities, especially through WhatsApp and unmoderated platforms, and why we have to be careful not to accidentally help it spread.
Why repeating false claims (even to debunk them) backfires. Saying “No, undocumented immigrants are not voting” actually makes the brain store “undocumented immigrants are voting.” Instead, we need to state the truth in clear, affirmative terms.
We also talked about the many ways people can take action, even if you can’t be out protesting or don’t speak Spanish fluently. From babysitting for someone headed to a march to organizing a sign-making party, we all have a role to play. It doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. But it all matters.
This isn’t about border security anymore. It’s about targeting minorities. And it’s time we say that out loud.
But there’s still hope.
💥 79% of Americans now say immigration is good for the country
💥 85% support citizenship for Dreamers
💥 Trump’s immigration approval rating is plummeting, especially with Latinos
If you missed the live, you can still watch it and catch up. But if you only read one thing today, let it be this:
You’re not alone. You don’t have to do it all. And you’re allowed to rest without giving up the fight.
