I Can’t Talk About Todd Blanche Right Now

Some weeks, I need someone else to take the torch on major news. This is one of them.

I really wish I could sit here and make content about what’s happening in the Senate right now.

There are hearings for Trump’s personal attorney, Todd Blanche, who wants to become the next Attorney General. This is the man who protected Ghislaine Maxwell. This is the man who was in charge of the Department of Justice report that exposed victims’ names to the public.

One of the senators we need to pressure to vote NO on Todd Blanche’s confirmation is Maine Senator Susan Collins. She’s trying to distance herself now from the fact that she helped give $70 billion to ICE for expanded operations.

I wish I could focus on that story today. But I can’t. Because in the past week, several people have died in immigration related operations, and that’s the reason I am barely functional right now.

What’s happening

  • ICE fatally shot two men in the past week who weren’t even the people they were looking for.

  • Both were Latino, hardworking men.

  • The most recent, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, was a Colombian man who was here working. He had a Social Security number.

  • Before him, there was Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. His family found out he’d been shot through a Facebook video.

Why this matters

The Pew Research Center just released a study on how Latinos relate to their identity and their place in this country. One part of it broke me.

57% of Latino Trump voters said that what happens to other Latinos doesn’t affect what happens to them.

I honestly can’t wrap my head around that.

Because when my friends found out about Lorenzo Salgado getting shot, they immediately picked up the phone to call their dads, their brothers, their uncles, just to check if they were okay.

It’s the same reflex parents have when they hear about a school shooting and immediately call their kids. Except now, we’re the ones calling our parents. Because we heard about an ICE shooting.

I need you

I don’t have the emotional capacity to talk about this every single day right now, and I don’t think I’m alone in that. Some of us just don’t.

That’s exactly why I need people showing what’s actually happening at these traffic stops. I need people to show that these are hardworking individuals who want the best for their families and communities. They’re trying to contribute. They are not looking for handouts.

This is not the country we want for our kids.

Con cariño,
