Sylvia Salazar reminds us how many Latino votes for Trump were framed by relentless right-wing disinformation that floods both Spanish-language and English-language Latino-centric spaces.
A detailed and compassionate approach to pre-bunking the disinfo much earlier in the cycle.
Sylvia, I appreciate you and this is excellent but are any Latino political strategists reading your substack? How can this message get to where it will have the most impact?
Cara, I appreciate you and your questions. To be honest, I have no idea if they are. I can't say I know many.
Also, if I may be perfectly vulnerable and transparent with you, many of the people in power are not Latinos and are making these decisions thinking they know best.
I've tried reaching out in the past to provide suggestions on things I've seen that could be addressed (like incorrect and poor translations), only to receive a condescending email telling me I don't know what I'm talking about. Spanish is my first language and my mother was a federal interpreter, so I would disagree with them.
A dear friend, activist, and organizer whom I met in a Swing Left Zoom call told me that, sadly, a lot of the decision-makers would not take me seriously without the endorsement from one of their peers.
That's why even though I will say these things in as many meetings as I can, I am also making it public in spaces like Substack, hoping it will maybe reach one of those decision-makers who will take the time to meet with me and have a real discussion about what we can do moving forward.
Hate to say this but some people from South America are not that progressive. So Trump spoke to what they dislike like he spoke to dislikes of all other Americans. The oddest thing to me is that after Cubans got Rubio to where he is, De Santis and ICE are now coming after Cubans in Florida. Look folks, believe what Black Americans tell you. No one is safe😡
I am from South America. This is a very big issue in messaging that is not going to be fixed overnight, but if we stop trying to figure out a better way to communicate with these voters, we will keep losing
