Is your Substack available in Spanish. I would really like to share with Spanish speaking friends. I listen to Substack posts via the AI option due to visual impairment issues and it would be incredibly useful for folks with literacy problems especially if it was an option en español.

Hi Janie, I don’t have it available in Spanish. This is due to several different reasons, one of them being that I don’t have the resources or bandwidth to recreate things in two languages.

If I’m translating content, I’m not covering something else. 😞

And there’s an important thing I learned early on when I used to make a daily Spanish newsletter is that Latinos don’t consume written content as much and prefer video. That’s why in 2018 I made a hard pivot and taught myself to produce short form videos.

This is a topic I love to talk about so if you want to discuss further, feel free to DM me 🫶🏼

Thank you for your thoughtful response. That makes total sense - both the difficulty of managing two languages and the preference for many Latino folks for video communications. I had the idea that listening might be a valid alternative. Any links you might have to the short videos you referenced would be greatly appreciated. In an effort to work with and support immigrants during these terrible times, I'm looking for the best ways to provide useful information. Most of the materials are written and thus assume a pretty sophisticated level of literacy. It's such a terrifying time. Anything I can do to make critical and timely info accessible feels like the least I can offer. Again many thanks!!

Hi Janie,

Thank you for being so thoughtful and engaged. There are different things that will work for different groups, so that's an important part to keep in mind.

I met with some organizations and volunteers to work on this, for example:

Unfortunately, ICE has been doing whatever it wants in many cases and not following the law or entering places without a judicial warrant. But the best thing to do is work with organizations who are on the ground working with the community because they have a relationship and know what is working for that particular area.

Please feel free to send me a DM here on Substack if you want to hear more.

Thank you for this detailed and helpful response. Our team has been working for many years and we are fully engaged with our local nonprofit that coordinates rapid response teams, know your right training, safety planning and Moore. We have all of these in place now in our community and locally, it looks like we might be a model for some other communities. We are fortunate to have a Tiedt community of immigrants and we, a group of mostly white people, work closely with them and always follow their leadership. The idea of videos is what really intrigues me as a way to reach out more effectively. And yes, I see E has total disregard for the law and for people’s right to protection and privacy. Sadly children, teachers, front line employees, parents, aunties, and uncles, and allies are all having to learn know your rights training in order to do their best job and keeping ICE at bay. Things are moving so quickly though, and as we know so many laws are being broken in order to expel folks, or lock them up or disappear them altogether. It is both astounding and predictable.

Thank you, Janie!

I can share this YouTube channel that I know is reliable and has an entire team of people who fact check everything that is said.

Full disclaimer: you might see me in some of the videos because I've worked for them as talent. This is not just about immigration. It covers a lot of the issues that are top of mind for the Latino community in the U.S.

The majority of Latinos voted for Harris, and if only Latinos had voted, Harris would have won.
